.

.

.

D. Soil Samples:

1. Soil samples will be taken at the beginning of the 1957 cropping
season at the 0-7", 7-18", am 18-33" depth from all plots.
2 . The plots will be sampled before any surface irrigation is
applied.
3. Six borings will be composited to make up each sample at each
depth.

VI. ~eriment III - Alfalfa Strip Tests:

A. Objectives:

To observe the effects of an amendment, leaChing, and variable
surface irrigation on the yield of alfalfa under subirrigated con-
ditions.

B. General Procedure:

Alfalfa has been cut from the alfalfa strips for three seasons.
Heavy winterkilling has decreased stands markedly. No changes or
additions of the follOtoring ~rill be made for 1957:

1. Amendments
2. Land preparation
3. Leaching
4. Fertilizer
5. Planting
6. 101ater-table conditions - A water table of 22 inches will be
maintained, if possible.

Surface Irrigation

1. All strips were flooded with approximately 4 A.-in. of Hater
in November, 1956.
2. Strips s-4, s-5, and S-6 will receive no irrigation until late
fall.
3. Strips 3-1, S-2, and S-3 will be surface irrigated after each
cutting is made.

C. Yield Results:

A 5-foot S1-lath, lengthwise, through each alfalfa strip will
be harvested and yields will be determined.

VII. Experiment IV - Grass Establishment Plots:

The grass plots were established in 1954. Although initial
emergence was good, the stand failed to remain. The failure of the
tall wheatgrass stand to remain may have been due to poor moisture
relations rather than the effect of soil salinity or alkalinity.
Re-establishment of the grass plots will be made.

r ,-, r ':' r"'l"'1
'.)
