.

.

.

A. Objectives:

1. To apply prinoiples of reolamation as developed to date to the
reclamation of adjoining land on a large field plot basis.
2. To compare the effect of subsoil tillage practices and regular
tillage practices on the reclamation of the soils and on the
yield of alfalfa on soils with and ",ithout a "pan layer".
3. To evaluate the effectiveness of subsoil tillage practices on
the longevity of alfalfa stands in the ''pan'' area.

B. General Procedure:

The trial consists of two separate experiments, each with a
split plot design on soil with a "pan" layer and ,.,i thout a "pan"
layer. The main plot variables are: (1) 36-in. plowing, (2) 4-5-
in. plOl<ring, and (3) 36-in. chiselling. The split plot variables
are: (1) no iP'Psum, and (2) 1 T ./A. of gypsum. All plots were
leached with 28 A.-in. of water and ",ere fertilized with 300 lb./A.
of pO! 05 fertilizer (treble superphosphate). The plots were seeded
with inoculated Ranger alfalfa at the rate of 8 lb./A.

1. Amendments - No amendments ,rill be added in 1957.
2. Leaching - No additional leaChing will be made in 1957.
3. Fertilizer - No additional fertilizer applications will be
made in 1957.
4. Land preparation and planting - None will be done in 1957 unless
the new seeding of alfalfa is winterkilled. In the case of severe
winterkilling, the plots will be plowed and reseeded ",ith alfalfa.
5. ,.ater-table conditions - The plots will be subirrigated to main-
tain the water table at 22 inches if possible. lr/'ater-table
levels will be checked by readings of observation wells.
6. Surface irrigation - No irrigation variable will be applied on
the new plots in 1957. All plots will be irrigated uniformly
to insure the establishment of the stand and to promote maximum
root development.
7. Tensiometers and gypsum blocks - Tensiometers will be placed
in selected plots to record the soil moisture status and to aid
in determining the time of irrigation. The depth of placement
of tensiometers will be at 6, 18, and 30 inches. Surface irri-
gation will be applied when 15-20 inches of moisture tension
are reached at the 6-inch depth before the first cutting of
alfalfa. Irrigation will be applied when 8-10 inches of tension
are reached at the IS-inch depth after the first cutting has
been removed.

C. Yield Results:

1. A measured portion of each plot ",ill be harvested and yield
determinations made.
2. Statistical analysis of the data will be made. The experiments
on the ''pan'' and "no pan" will be analyzed separately and the
data will be COmbined, also.

- 4 -

r. ... ,...
