.

.

.

unless irrigation is necessary to retain the alfalfa stand.
Tensiometers and gypsum blocks will be L:laced in selected
plots at 12, 24, and 48-inch depths and the moisture read-
ings will be recorded.
East Series (high water table)
-
a. High surface irrigation rate - Replications V and VI (N
plots) will receive the high rate of surface irrigation.
Tensiometers will be used to determine the time that the
irrigation water is to be applied, as well as the appear-
ance of the plants. The tensiometers will be placed in
selected plots at 12, 24, and )6-inch depths. Irrigations
will be applied when moisture tensions of 15-20 inches at
the 12-inch depth and 8-10 inches at the 24-inch depth are
reached or the appearance of the alfalfa indicates extreme
droughtiness before these moisture tensions are reached.
b.. Low surface irrigation rate - Replications VII and VIII (S
plots) .1ill receive the low surface irrigation rate. No
surface irrigation will be applied unless surface irrigation
is necessary to retain the alfalfa stand. Tensiometers will
be placed in selected plots at 12, 24, and )6-inch depths
and the moisture readings will be recorded.
All Plots
---
A late fall irrigation will be applied to all plots
(standard procedure).
8. Stand count - A stand count will be made on a 5-foot strip,
selected on the basis of stand uniformity, in each plot in both
the drained and sub irrigated areas.
9. Root studies - Pits will be dug (probably in the X-plots) to
determine the condition and extent of the alfalfa roots.
10. Culture - Spray for the control of insects and disease will be
used if necessary.

C. Yield Results:

A measured portion of each plot will be harvested and yield
deteminations made.

D. Soil Sampling:

1. Sixteen plots will be sampled at 0-7", 7-18", and 18-33" (Plots
No.1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 13, 18, 51, 55, 64, 66, 69, 72, 77, and
79).
2. The samples 1.111 be taken after the last cutting of alfalfa has
been made.

E. Statistical Analysis:

Statistical analysis of the data will be made.

V.
