.

.

IV. Experiment I - Reclamation of Saline-Alkali Soils - 1957. (Main Recla-
mation Plots):

A. Objectives for 1957:

1. To further evaluate the effects of amendments, differential
leachings, and moisture on crop yields and soil characteristics
(TSS, ESP, etc.) since it is desirable to know how long the
original treatments with various amendments and leaching oper-
ations are effective.
2. To determine the effects of variable rates of surface applied
irrigation water on the yield and stand of alfalfa growing under
high and laor water-table conditions.

B. General Procedure:

1. Amendments - No amendments will be added in 1957.
2. Land preparation - None.
3. Leaching - No additional leaching will be made in 1957.
4. Fertilizer - 300 lb. P"Os/A. of phosphate fertilizer .ras applied
prior to planting in 1955>. No additional fertilizer application
was made in 1956 and none will be made in 1957.
5. Planting - Alfalfa was seeded with barley during the 1955 season.
Some plots which had thin stands were reseeded during the 1956
season. No further reseeding is planned in'1957.
6. 'vater-table conditions - The .rater table "rill continue to be
checked by readings of 12 observation wells in the area.
lvest Series - The pUInp will be operated to maintain a lowered
water table at all times in this area (4 ft. or lower).
East Series - Water pumped in the draining of the West Series
will be utilized for maintaining a high water table in the East
Series. If possible, this level will be 22 inches which is
adequate for subirrigation.
7. Surface irrigation -
Source of irrigation water - well No. 1
Irrigation Variables - 1957 -
~ Series (low water table)

a. High surface irrigation rate - Replications II (NE plots)
ani IV (31v plots) will receive the high rate of surface
irrigation. Tensiometers will be used to determine the time
that the irrigation water is to be applied, as well as the
appearance of the plants. Tensiometers will be placed in
selected plots at 12, 24, and 48-inch depths. Irrigations
will be applied when moisture tension of 15-20 inches at
the 12-inch depth and 8-10 inches at the 24-inch depth are
reached or when the appearance of the alfalfa indicates
extreme droughtiness before these moisture tensions are
reached.
b. Low surface irrigation rate - Replications I (Ntv plots) and
III (31'1 plots) will receive the low rate of surface irri-
gation. Only one irrigation will be applied for each cutting

- 2 -

r' .... ,... r. f~" ,..
<J ~ ..... t; . I...&.
