<br />000790 <br /> <br />(ii) <br /> <br />Minerals Evaluation. <br /> <br />The United States Geological <br /> <br />Survey (USGS) and the Bureau of Mines (BM) will be requested to ~ond~ct <br /> <br />a mineral survey OD each wilderness study area or island recommended as <br /> <br />suitable for designation as wilderness. This survey is requi.red under <br /> <br />section 603 of the Federal Land Policy and Manage~ent Act to determine <br /> <br />the ~ineral values, if any, that may be present in the study area. If <br /> <br />previously unknown mineral values are found, the information will then be <br /> <br />handled as new data with a recycle of the planning analysis for reevaluation <br /> <br />of our recollIIllendation. Tlle mineral survey "open report" by USGS and BM must <br /> <br />be available prior to holding the public hearing on a suitable recommenda~ion. <br /> <br />(iii) Legal Requirement. Mandatory cultural, air quality,l <br /> <br />rare and endangered species compliance requirements and other applicable <br /> <br />.1 <br /> <br />requirements will be undertaken. <br /> <br />(iv) NEPA. Required environmental assessment record (EAR) <br /> <br />and, if necessary, an environmental impact statement (ES) for those areas <br /> <br />being recommended for wilderness preservation will be prepared. <br /> <br />(v) Public Notice. The Federal Land Policy and Manage- <br /> <br />ment Act of 1976 requires that proced~res spelled out in section 3(d) of <br /> <br />the Wilderness Act shall be utilized for obtaining public input for the <br /> <br />Bh~ wilderness review process. These pu~lic notifiCAtion procedures will <br /> <br />involve (1) p'lblishing notice of the proposed designations in the Federal <br /> <br />Register and widely publicizing the proposals in the news media serving <br /> <br />the area, (2) officially notifying State and local governments, and (3) <br /> <br />holding at least one public h~aring and as many public meetings and <br /> <br />contacts as necessary to obtain comment on the proposed designation.
