2

.

.

,
.

3. Feed -- This is something we will have to work with to find what works
best for us. We should have a supply of forage available for the wild
fish to start with. The amount needed would be contingent on the number
of wild fish brought in.

Growth Rates -- Averaging out the growth rates in the literature, the average
A
is about .014 inches per day. With constant 75 water, we should be able to
obtain about 1 inch growth per month. (Roger Hammond, pers. comm.).

Requirements to Raise lOO,OOO, 4-in. Fish

A 4-in. squawfish would be about 52 fish per gound (from the available
literatire I figured a condition factor of 30210-). If we can raise the
fish at 2 lbs per ft3, this would require 962 cu ft of rearing space
(l923/2). A water flow of l20 gpm would give one exchange per hour. Two lbs
per ft3 should be possible if the fish are kept sorted.

Manpower Requirements

Two full time employees would be ideal.
Superintendent--should have some broodfish experience and some knowledge
of genetics would be helpful. Should be hired as Fish Culturist II or
equivalent.
Helper-should be fulltime but if not, would have to have someone for
about ll3 days a year. Should be hired as a Fish Culturist I or
equivalent.

Suggestions:

l. If a squawfish hatchery is built, I believe the person who is to be in
charge should be on hand from the start so he/she will know the exact
location of all pipelines and valves. .

2. That the person in charge be sent to Dexter NFH for one week to observe
their operation during spawning.

4

Preliminary Cost Estimates for Initial Startup
System requirement - heat 800 gpm; raw water to 75 F.

Work to be done at power plant to provide:

plus lO%

$l,250,000
2,000
2,500
12,760
6,000

$l,273,260
l27,326

$l,400,586

Heated water (see attachment)
Lumber
Pipes, valves, etc (for inside bUilding)
Raceways (4 @ $3,l90 each)
Pickup truck
