Water resources of the Mimbres Basin, New Mexico. A
study by the U. S. Geological Survey and New Mexico State Engineer
Office to collect and analyze quantitative data on the extent and
hydrologiC properties of aquifers in the Mimbres Basin so that
predictions of long-term effects of groundwater withdrawals can
be made.

12. Geothermal hydrology of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico.
A study by the U. S. Geological Survey to discover the role of
hydrologic conditions in the flow of earth heat. This study will
identify areas of groundwater recharge and discharge in and
around the caldera, determine groundwater gradients and tempera-
tures, and develop a conceptual model of the hydrologiC flow
system. This is an investigation of geothermal resources as a
potential source of energy.

13. Water resources investigation of Laguna Indian Reservation.
A study by the U. S. Geological Survey to outline areas of possible
groundwater development, and determine quantities of surface water
available for irrigation. The inhabitants of the Laguna Indian Res-
ervation are in need of a larger and better water supply for domestic,
community, industrial; stock, and irrigation uses.

14. Water resources investigation of Acoma Indian Reservation.
A study by the U. S. Geological Survey to outline areas of possible
groundwater development and determine quantities of surface water
available for irrigation. The inhabitants of the Acoma Indian Res-
ervation are in need of a larger and better water supply for domestic,
community, industrial, stock, and irrigation uses.

15. Rio Grande Regional Environmental Project (RGREP). An
investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation and others which
will examine alternatives for better utilization and mffilagement
of existing water supplies, and possibilities of development of
new water sources so practical decisions can be made for future
growth of the area between Elephant Butte Reservoir, New Mexico,
and Fort Quitman, Texas.

~, ,

16. Rio Grande water salvage project. An investigation to
prove the feasibility of restoring to the Rio Grande a substantial
portion of water now being consumed by noncommercial vegetation
in the flood plain of the Rio Grande. The proposed plan is to
clear about 17,800 acres and selectively thin about 2,800 acres
of noncommercial phreatophytes and to control regrowth on the
cleared and thinned areas.

,."

42
