<br />nC;DS5G <br /> <br />Program. <br /> <br />TIle Dolores River study, which is nearing completion <br /> <br />will ~e discussed in some d~tail and will be the subject of some <br /> <br />colored slides that will be shown later in this presentation. <br /> <br />Rivers t11at are included in the national wild an~ scenic <br /> <br />r~vers system must be free-flowing and possess one or more of the <br /> <br />outstandingly remarkable values. <br /> <br />They can be added to the system <br /> <br />either of two ways--by Act of congress or pursuant. to designation <br /> <br />by a state legislature. <br /> <br />St~te rivers included in the national <br /> <br />system must be permanently administered by the state and must be <br /> <br />found by the Secretary of the Interior to be suitable for inclusion <br /> <br />in the system. <br /> <br />Every river in the system must be classified, <br /> <br />designated, and administered as one of the following: <br /> <br />wild river areas--Thos.e rivers or sections of <br /> <br />rivers that are free of impoundments and generally <br /> <br />inaccessible except by trail, with watershed or <br /> <br />shorelines essentially primitive and waters <br /> <br />unpolluted. <br /> <br />Scenic r~ver areas--Those rivers or sections of <br /> <br />rivers that are free of impoundments, with <br /> <br />shorelines or watersheds still largely. <br /> <br />primitive and shorelines largely undeveloped, <br /> <br />but accessible in places by roads. <br /> <br />Recreational r~ver areas--TI1ose rivers. or <br /> <br />-4- <br />
