'O\\(jj4lJ

12. Dolores - the segment of the. main stem from Rico

upstream to its source. including its headwaters; the West Dolores

from its source, including its headwaters, downstream to its

confluence with the main stem; and the segment beginning a"short

distance downstream of the proposed McPhee dam site to the Colorado-

utah border. excluding the segment from One mile above Highway 90

to the confluence of the San Miguel River.

On February 5, 1975, the Executive Director of the

Colorado Department of Natural Resources made an official request

to the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture that the wild and

scen~c rivers studies of these 12 rivers be done on joint federal-

state bases. TIlese requests were granted by both Secretaries.

Therefore, the State of Colorado will be a full partner in the

performance of the wild and scenic rivers studies and in the

preparations of recommendations to Congress. The Water Conserva-

tion Board was named as principal coordinating agency for state

input.

These wild and scenic rivers studies, with the exception

of the Dolores River study, must be completed by October, 1979.

Congress made special provision for the Dolores River study by

specifying that the .study must be completed by January 3, 1976.

This apparently was to ensure that the wild and scenic rivers study

would not interfere with the progress of the Dolores Project or the

Paradox Valley unit of the Colorado River water Quality Improvement

-3-
