Reservoir Operation Report

reservoir system this year resulted in the highest reservoir levels to

date in several of the reservoirs and required releases in excess of any

e~)erienced since the system was placed in operation over 20 years ago.

At

J\~
i!

the time of maximum storage in late July, the reservoir system contained

'. ~: "\ ....~
"

14 million acre-feet of water in the flood control storage zones.

However,

empty flood storage space totaling 2-~ million acre-feet still remained at

that time to control late-season flood inflO1'ls, had they

occurred.

Operations, which is composed of representatives of 10 basin states and eight

Federal agencies, reviewed operations of the reservoir system at its annual

fall meeting in Omaha Thursday at the Corps of Engineers' Reservoir Control

Center.

The Conlluittee noted that operation of the reservoir system prevented a

major flood on the Missouri River this year, but that the reservoir levels

and releases which were necessary to control the flood resulted in a number

of complaints of lowland flooding and erosion.

In most cases, problems 11ere
