A concrete-lined oDen-channel type spillway, controlled <br />by two 18-foot by 18.5-foot radial gates, serves to regulate the <br />lake level. Appurtenant construction included a relocated road <br />bri~ge, a combination footbridge and check-structure located on <br />the eoualizing channel between the 1~ke5, and improvements for the <br />municioality of Grand Lake and certain areas in the vicinity of <br />Shadow Uountain Lake. <br /> <br />..... <br /> <br />Shadow ~ountain Camn (1938), located west of Shadow Vountain <br />Lake, was built to house Government personnel emoloyed in the con- <br />struction of ~hadow Mountain Dam, Granby Dam, and the Granby <br />Pumping Plant and Pump Canal. The camp consists of 10 permanent- <br />type buildings--6 single residences :md 4 dllplex cottages--and <br />temporary housing ~nich includes 64 prefabricated single residences, <br />6 QUonset huts, 9 portable huts, I garage, and 2 au onset-type huts <br />which serve as office and laboratory buildings. After construction <br />of the project facilities in this vicinity has been completed, the <br />portable huts and most of the prefabricated houses will probably <br />be removed. 'the permanent-type residences and duplex cottages to- <br />gether ~~th the remaining prefabricated residences are for use of <br />operation and maintenance personnel. <br /> <br />Alva B. Adams Tun~el <br /> <br />Alva A. Adams Tunnel (1940-1946) transports water received <br />from the UPDer Colorado River watershed on the Western Slope under <br />the r.o~ttnent~l Divide to the South Platte ~iver Basin on the <br />Eastern SlaDe. From the west portal at Grnnd Lake, the tunnel <br />extends east 13.07 miles to a point on Wind ~iver about 505 miles <br />southwest of ~stes Park. Ry highway, the distance from the west <br />portal to the east Dortal is nearly 50 miles. ftctual rliversions <br />through the tunnel bee:an on June 23, 191.7) with aDDroDriate dedica- <br />tion ceremonies at the east portal. The excavation and lining of <br />the tunnel, together ~~th ~iscellaneous construction including <br />aopurtenant control structures and acces~ roads at the Dortals, <br />was completed under two nrincipal contracts by the S. ~. ~agoffin <br />Company and Stiers Brothers Construction Ccmnany. Completion of <br />this tunnel, reputed to be the longest ever constructed exclusively <br />from two portal-hea'ings, was delayed by wartime conditions which <br />ha~pered construction progress. <br /> <br />15 <br />
