<br />-8- <br /> <br />~:, <br /> <br />... <br />Cj) DAM SAFETY <br />c;o <br />~ The program at the May 1987 meeting of AWRBIAC focused on the <br />theme, "Dam Safety". The speakers and summaries of their <br />presentations are shown below. The text of their remarks can be <br />found in the published "Minutes of the 119th Meeting, St. Louis, <br />Missouri, May 20-22, 1987. <br /> <br />Pep~T_t!D~llt._ ()! _tlJ~...I..1l t~T! ().T <br /> <br />Mr. Henry W. "Hank" Sandhaus, Regional Supervisor, Division of <br />Water, Land and Power, DOl Bureau of Reclamation, Amarillo, <br />Texas, presented an overview of the Department of the Interior's <br />Dam Safety program by discussing its history, organization, <br />process, funding, long-range planning, training, and hydrology. <br />Mr. Sandhaus explained that the program includes the National <br />park Service, Fish and Wildlife Servioe, Bureau of Land <br />Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Bureau of Reclamation. <br />Each agency has a Safety of Dams Coordinator who handles funding <br />and administrative issues. In summary Mr. Sandhaus stated the <br />the Department of Interior has developed a significant dam safety <br />program that is performing satisfactorily. The program, <br />according to Mr. Sandhaus, should continue to perform <br />satisfactorily as long as personnel involved maintain their <br />capabilities to perform effectively and the priority of dam <br />safety remains high. <br /> <br />pep_~Ttlll.~!IJ ()Jt.lJe ...J\T~ <br /> <br />Mr. David Wright, Civil Engineer, Engineering Division, Corps of <br />Engineers, Southwestern Division, Dallas, Texas, discussed the <br />Corps of Engineers' role in the initial non-federal dam safety <br />program brought about by Public Law 92-367. Mr. Wright also <br />briefed the committee regarding Corps activities and programs <br />relating to dam safety particularly within the Southwestern <br />Division's jurisdiction. <br /> <br />Dl'lPIiT.tolll.e!l.tog 1'. J\gr !_~tJH tJ_Te <br /> <br />Mr. Joe Haugh, National Planning Engineer, USDA Soil Conservation <br />Service, Washington, D.C., summarized the Soil Conservation <br />Service's involvement with dam safety activities. According to <br />Mr. Haugh, SCS has been involved with the installation of over <br />25,000 dams under various soil and water conservation programs <br />which represents about 40 percent of all non-federal dams in the <br />United States.
