The reduced water supplies have created the prospect of
,')e
,1'\ _~\, r\l, -l, , U

15'" ,; ",' inadequate hydroelectric supplies and the need for other

'~"'!i;""(f

conditions have been reviewed and the results are summarized

"

measures to ,respond to regional electricity demands. These

below, primarily for the period of June through September
1977. Continuous monitoring of the regional electricity
conditions for the winter of 1977-78 is planned.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Barring unusual circumstances, such as large

scale forced outages of electrical facilities, extremely

hot weather, or natural disasters, electricity supply will

probably be sufficient, but special attention must be

directed to northern California, Washington, Oregon and

Idaho.

2. Drought conditions have reduced the ability of
hydroelectric generating facilities to supply energy to
the extent that the hydro deficiency for summer 1977
(June through September), based on the 1976 projections
11
for the region,- could range as high as 19,000 gigawatthours
(GWh), depending upon spring precipitation, for the total

11 The April 1, 1976 projections in the WSCC report under
FPC Order 383-3 are the most recent consistent, integrated
region-wide 'set of data available. Should the April 1, 1977
data differ 'substantially this report will be up-dated
accordingly.

2
