of lessenecl surface water irrigation. Since many irrigation
pumps use natural gas as a fuel, increased consumption of
natura~ ga~ will result. There is no indication as to the
magnitude of increased demand for gas but with the winter
heating se~sdn past there should be a sufficient supply.
Additional, gas consumption by generating plants is expected
to be limited since most of the fossil generation is in
oil-fired plants.
Coal mining, uranium mining and milling, and land
reclamati~n require relatively small amounts of water
and no cu~tailment of these activities is anticipated in
1977.

EMPLOYMENT

The aluminum industry has concentrated a large

number of 'plants in the Pacific Northwest because of the

historically low cost of hydroelectricity. Some of

these plants have already experienced power curtailments

which haVe resulted in over 400 persons being laid

off, with expectations of greater employment cuts.
