OTHER FUELS

;1'\~~~~6
~. ", t' /
-' ," ".' "",. --

The primary impact of the drought on other fuels
will be ~he increased use of fossil fuels in general

and an e~pecially large increase in oil generation in

California. Thermal plants probably will be operated

whenever :possible to minimize the need for further

drawdown<of the reservoirs, to save water for other

purposes ,such as agriculture, and to provide for a

potentially worse situation next year. In California

alone the projections are for at least 30 million

additional barrels of oil to be consumed in 1977.

Supplies of the additional fuel oil seem to be

sufficient with present suppliers furnishing virtually

all of the additional needs; there are no expected

problems dn this respect. There does not appear to

be any ta~ker shortage for delivery of foreign

petroleum"

In s~condary recovery of oil by water flooding,

brine produced with the oil is generally reinjected

and any required makeup water is obtained from other

subsurface aquifers. Thus, secondary recovery is

essentia11y free from constraints resulting from
drought conditions.

42

-t

""-3\;""""0';;'-4;-,,,.__<>-",

_,.it-;.,

"-,', - '
,m,..&,;" ':!<,"
