M. Release
20 April 1960

No. 637

Public views on how the water stored in Missouri River main stem re-

servoirs should be controlled &"ld regulated for the 1960-61 season will

be heard at a public meeting in Omaha, May 17.

The all-day session, to be conducted by the Coordinating Committee on

Missouri River Main Stem Reservoir Operation, will be the third consecutive

yearly meeting for this purpose.

R. J. Pafford, Jr., Chief of the Missouri River Reservoir Control Center

located in Omaha, and chairman of the Coordinating Committee" said the meet-

ing is intended to provide a forum for expression of public opinion on storage

and regulation of flows of the Missouri River in actual year-to-year opera-

tions of the large reservoirs on the main stem of the Missouri.

The meeting will be open to all interests affected by the multiple-purpose

fu."lctions of the five operating reservoirs--Fort Peck in ~~ntana; Garrison in

North Da.l{ota; Oahe and Fort Ra."ldall in South Dakota, and Gavins Point on the

South Dakota-Nebraska border. Mr. Pafford points out that the Coordinating

Committee is a water scheduling group, not a legislative body. It does not

have authority to act upon proposals for modifications of project designs or

changes in basic legislative provisions gov~rning over-all construction and

operation of the l'lissouri Basin program.

-.~:~, -.^
-~':...

The May meeting will be held in conjunction with the Coordinating Com-

mittee's regular spring meeting at which general criteria andgbjectives' for

the 1960-61 annual reservoir operating plan will be developed.
