<br />,/t.4I"'l.) <br />i.. . . ..1 <br /> <br />OPERATION AND MAINTE!\:A!\:CE <br /> <br />29 <br /> <br />built by the District to provide delivery to the cities of Compton, <br />Long Beach, and Torrance_ The water level in Palos Verdes <br />reservoir varies between a maximum elevation of 320 feet and a <br />minimum of 270_ Backllow is available to supply the harbor district <br />of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Torrance. Compton, and other areas <br />as far north as 108th Street. <br />The Santa Monica branch extends in a westerly and southwesterly <br />direction from the Eagle Rock tower 24.5 miles to connect with the <br />Santa Monica city water system at its Arcadia reservoir_ Along this <br />pipe line there are two connections to the Glendale system, three <br />to the Burbank system including a short lateral in Kenneth Road, <br />two to the Los Angeles city system, one to Beverl,' Hills, and one to <br />Santa Monica. <br />In addition to Lake Mathews. Orange County, Corona Del Mal'. <br />and Palos Verdes reservoirs. the District has acquired from the <br />City of Pasadena the Morris reservoir in Pine Canyon on the San <br />Gabriel River. This reservoir provides emergency storage above <br />the upper feeder to which it is connected through Monrovia tunnel <br />No_ 2 and a steel pipe line under the river bed immediately below <br />Morris Dam. <br /> <br />Co-nstruction of the distribut-iol1 system <br /> <br />Construction of the distribution s,-stem to serve the 13 original <br />constituent areas of the District was completed in July 1941- <br />Following the annexation of the Coastal Municipal Water District <br />in June 1942, the first enlargement of the system took place with the <br />extension of the Orange County feeder from Santa Ana to the Coast <br />Highway at Corona Del Mar. This extension was completed in <br />February 1944_ In September 1946 the City of Brea and the <br />unincorpomted lIrea of Fairview Farms became a part of the <br />Metropolitan Water District by annexation to the Coastal Municipal <br />Water District. To serve Brea. a lateral from the Orange Count,- <br />feeder. 700 feet long. was constructed by District forces_ First <br />delivery of water to Brea was made on June 7, 1947_ Construction <br />of the San Diego aqueduct from the west portal of San Jacinto <br />tunnel to San Vicente reservoir of the San Diego city water system <br />was virtually completed in November 1947_ <br />A map of the distribution system showing the location of the <br />regervoirs. pipe lines, softening plant, and constituent areas form- <br />ing the Metropolitan Water District is displayed on pages 26 and 27_ <br />A map of the constituent areas of the San Diego County Water <br />Authority and the San Diego aqueduct is shown on page 34. <br />
