S_ Bureau of the Census, the Los Angeles County Regional <br />Planning Commission, the San Diego County Water Authority, and <br />engineers of the Orange County cities. <br />The as"essed valuation of property subj ect to District taxes, as <br />of the first Monday in March 1948, including the annexation of <br />West Basin on July 23. 1948, increased $439.868,403 over that of <br />the fiscal year 1947-48_ Tax exempt property in constituent areas <br />of the District, including exemptions for war veterans, churches. <br />institutions of collegiate grade. certain charitable institutions. and <br />public property including schools, is now valued at more than <br />$1.000,000,000. This total doe" not contain any federal, state, and <br />county property also exempt from District taxes. The basis of <br />assessment being approximately 50 per cent of fair market <br />valuation, the total market value of all property within the Metro- <br />politan Water District. and therefore protected from the devastat- <br />ing effect of drouth by water of the Colorado River, is in round <br />figures $8.750.000,000_ <br />
