More detailed assessments are available from the
states, the Corps or the General Contractor for the various alternatives.

SOURCE BASINS

The potential basins of origin for the water transfer studies under
element B-1 were surveyed and preliminary analysis narrowed the options to
the Upper Missouri River, and its tributaries, above Kansas City in the
north; and to the compl ex of the Arkansas, White and Ouachi ta Ri vers in
Arkansas in the south. A number of alternative points of diversion and
routes were investigated from these basic source basins, with the most tech-
nically feasible alternatives selected in cooperation with the High Plains
Study Council for detailed analysis.

The Upper Missouri River

Several previously studied water transfer options from the Upper
Missouri River basin were reviewed, including the three intrastate diversions
conceptualized by the Nebraska Water Resources Commission in the preparation
of the 1971 state water plan.

Two interstate transfer routes and the three relatively short intrastate
routes in Nebraska were ultimately selected for more intensive investigations
as the most feasible opportunities in the North. The sources, diversion
poi nts, routes, termi nal storage facil it i es and other detail s of each water
transfer route are presented in Chapter Four.

The Arkansas Basins

Multiple sources and routes for water transfer to the High Plains por-
tions of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas were reviewed, including the intra-
state routes previously examined in the Oklahoma and Texas state water plans.
