Gunnnison River include fish, wildlife. and recreational uses in addition to
irrigation.

c:)

A requirement to maintain minimum instream flows
Westwater Canyon has been established by the U.S. Fish
the protection of endangered species. Although the
flow requirement at Westwater is still under study,
2000 cfs has been widely discussed.

in the Colorado River at
and Wildlife Service for
amount of that instream
a year-round minimum of

00
~
~

Legislation is currently proposed to create a national park surrounding
the Black Canyon and to confer Wild and Scenic River status on the Gunnison
River through the proposed park. Minimum instream flow quantities will be
established for the proposed Wild and Scenic River segment of the Gunnison. A
technical working group has been established to develop criteria for wild and
scenic instream flows,. This working group. which includes fisheries.
recreational. and other basin interests. has not yet defined an instream flow
regime for the reach.

DEFICIENCIES IN WATER QUANTITY AND QUALITY

During the cour.se of obtaining information regarding existing facilities
within the basin, an effort was made to identify deficiencies in quantity
and/or quality of surface water supplies in the basin. The purpose of
identifying these deficiencies is to verify their existence and to quantify
them during the course of the study.

Water quality deficiencies were indicated for the following streams:
Slate River above its confluence with Coal Creek; Red Mountain Creek;
Uncompahgre River; Henson Creek; Lake Fork of the Gunnison above Lake San
Cristabol; Indian Creek; Gold Creek; the headwaters of Taylor River; North
Quartz Creek; and Cochetopa Creek.

Streams indicated to experience late season flow deficiencies which are
detrimental to fishery production include:

Curecanti Creek
Soap Creek
Red Creek
East Elk Creek

Cochetopa Creek
Los Pinos Creek
South Willow Creek
Cebolla Creek

-7-
