<br />( ,\ <br /> <br />The National Park Service manages Curecanti National Recreation Area which <br />lies within the study area. Curecanti National Recreation Area was established <br />in 1965 under the authorization of the Colorado River Storage Act and covers <br />more than 40,000 acres of land including the three Aspinall Unit reser~oirs. <br />This recreation area has the highest number of visitors of any facility in the <br />study area making it a significant regional recreational facility and <br />contributor to the area's economy. With three lakes, most of the activity is <br />water-based and includes fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming and <br />windsurfing. <br /> <br />c:> <br /> <br /><") <br /> <br />G1:) <br />(,0 <br />~ <br /> <br />The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument is located immediately <br />douwnstream of the Curecanti National Recreation Area. This faCility has <br />experienced approximately 350,000 visitor days of use annually in recent years. <br />Although outside of the present study area, this facility is a regional <br />recreation faci,lity and has a definite impact on the number of. visitors that <br />use facilities within the study area. <br /> <br />The Colorado Division of Wildlife manages multiple parcels of land for <br />fishing and hunting access. They also own and operate three reservoirs which <br />provide fishing and camping opportunities. These reservoirs are Spring Creek, <br />Upper Dome and Lower .Dome Reservoirs. <br /> <br />The Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation (CDPOR) operates the <br />Sweitzer Lake State Recreation Area near Delta. The CDPOR will also operate <br />the Ridgway State Recreation Area which is presently under construction and <br />scheduled for completion in 1989. <br /> <br />Three commercial white water rafting outfitters offer a variety of float <br />trips and rafting experiences within the study area. Trips are conducted on <br />the Taylor River between the confluence with Crystal Creek and the confluence <br />with the East River; on the Gunnison River between the confluence with the <br />Taylor River and Blue Mesa Reservoir, and on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison <br />River between Ryan's Bridge (seven miles north of Lake City) and Blue Mesa <br />Reservoir. <br /> <br />There are several private campgrounds in the study area. These range from <br />resort communities such as Blue Mesa Recreation Ranch to standard recreational <br />vehicle, trailer and tent camping areas. <br /> <br />-5- <br />
