WATER-BASED RECREATION

c")
:::")
''':~j

The Upper Gunnison and Uncompahgre Basins offer diverse recreational
opportunities throughout the four seasons of the year. Projected income quring
1987 from tourism for the five counties contained in the study area is more
than $80 million (Colorado Tourism Board). The predominant water-based
recreational activity in terms of visitor days is fishing.

(l.l
c.o
~

The majority of the land in the study area is public lands managed by the
U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of land Management. The Colorado
Division of Wildlife and the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation
a 1 so operate recreat i on fac il it i es wi th i n the study area boundary.

There are about 1.75 million acres of National Forest land within the
study area. The National Forests provide many recreational activities such as
,camping and picnicking at developed recreation sites, and dispersed recreation
such as fishing, back-country camping and hiking in the undeveloped portions of
the National Forests and the wilderness areas within the National Forests.
There are four wilderness areas in the study area -. the West Elk, Big Blue,
Collegiate Peaks and la Garita. Together they cover some 403,110 acres.

The BlM manages large tracts of public land south of Gunnison in the
Cochetopa Creek drainage and south of Curecanti in the Cebolla Creek and lake
Fork drainages. There are three special recreation management areas (SRMA)
in the study basin; the Cochetopa Canyon SRMA, the American Flats/Silverton and
lower lake Fork SRMA and the Gunnison Gorge SRMA. In addition, the Powderhorn
Primitive Area, located along the Gunnison County/Hinsdale County border is an
important undeveloped recreation area. This area provides numerous back
country fishing opportunities. The Powderhorn Primitive Area is under study
and consideration for designation as a wilderness area.

The lake Fork drainage is BlM's most heavily used water~based recreation
corridor. There are many locations that provide good opportunities for
fishing. The Gateview Recreation Area on the lake Fork provides a campground
and numerous areas for day use activities. Whitewater boating is a key use in
this area. The BlM has one rafting permittee, Crested Butte Rafting, that
offers commercial raft trips in this area.

-4-
