C. 20240

Dear Mr. Secretary:

We would like to know the future status of the Pacific Southwest
Inter-Agency Committee (PSIAC), since the Water Resources Council (WRC)
is being disbanded. This Regional Committee's charter was approved by
the WRC in 1972. Under the charter, PSIAC is responsible to promote
coordination of the water and related land resources activities of the
federal agencies. states, and other interests; to promote resolution
of inter-agency problems at the regional level; to suggest to the WRC
and to the states changes in law or policy which would promote coordi-
nation, or resolution of inter-agency problems; and in its discretion,
to communicate with the WRC on matters of mutual interest.

Executive Order 12319, dated September 9. 1981, published in the
September 14. 1981 Federal Register orders the termination of the six
River Basin Commissions, but makes no mention of the Regional Inter-
Agency committees. Our main conCern is whether or not there is a place
for the Regional Inter-Agency committees under the Administration's new
water resources policy.

It is important that we receive your answer as to the future status of
the PSIAC by early November 1981, so we can notify the members before
our next meeting and take appropriate action at that time. We appreciate
your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely"

:/Ifm, 1I.Q~/~
WILLIAM H. PA~E--
Chairman

B-20

,
~, y':
