<br />O()3)7~ <br /> <br />Administrative studies in cooperation with Research are continuing to <br />determine the effects of resource use mId effectiveness of restoration <br />measures on soil stability and on liater quality and yield. These <br />include studies on overgrazed elk winter ranges in !lontana; deer ranges <br />in Colorado; sheep grazing in lVyoming; timber cutting in South Dakota; <br />and watershed structural and land treatment measures in Colorado. <br /> <br />Recreation use on the National Forests and National Grasslands liithin <br />the Missouri River Basin totaled over 14 million visitor days in <br />C.Y. 1961. Nel, recreatinn sites were developed and e:dsting sites <br />l,ere enlarged or improved. Approximately 400 nm, family units were <br />constructed and 550 family units rehabilitated in camp and picnic <br />grounds. l.,inter sports areas are being enlarged and several new <br />areas are being developed. <br /> <br />Forestry Cooperation on State and Private Land <br /> <br />Under Sections 2 and 4 of the Clark-McNary Act; the Cooperative Forest <br />Management Act; the Forest Pest Control Act; the General Forestry <br />Assistance Act; the P.L. 566 Small 'tlatershed Program; and other programs, <br />Forest Service cooperative activities with State Forestry agencies in <br />the Missouri Basin included: <br /> <br />1. Approximately 600 forest and range wildfires controlled; <br />fire protection provided on approximately 12 million rural <br />acres. <br /> <br />2. Provided technical forestry assistance to approximately 921 <br />owners of over 109,000 acres of private forests and <br />woodlands. <br /> <br />3. Provided and distributed approximately 9 million tree <br />seedlings to private landowners for planting over 17,000 <br />acres. . <br /> <br />4. All of the P.L. 566 watershed projects have been provided <br />with forestry planning assistance; over 5% of the projects <br />receive technical assistance for the installation of <br />forestry land treatment measures. <br /> <br />5. Over 300 thousand acres of timberland were surveyed for <br />insect and disease damage; over 4,000 trees liere <br />individually treated. <br /> <br />6.
