This 9,125 acre
experimental forest will provide facilities for studying climatic,
pedalogic and hydrologic factors that govern streamflow and sediment-
producing characteristics in the lodgepole pine forests.

:.,:
,".-."
".,'

..'. These include research on ways to improve shelterbelts; test-
ing new species and hybrids to determine suitability for the rigorous
conditions of the Gre'l.t. Plail'ls; renovatimg and maintaining old pla.-:lta-
tions; and on treating insects and diseases found in the shelterbelts.
A Government bulletin is being published on the influences of
shelterbelts on the microclimate and crop yields of the Great Plains.

In Nebraska the study of water and soil moisture used by windbreak
trees is being extended to depths of 20 and )0 feet below the ground
surface.

jo-'.:.';:';';

:;.:.t.:.~ I

:.;......::.
..... .
",,' ::.
.;.~..

...

<\1

, ,
:'.::2:} .

~. . Several camp and picnic grounds in South Dakota, Colorado,
and Wyoming have been selected for studying the type of use made of
recreational sites, who uses them, for how long, for what purpose, how
intensively, and effects on soil, timber, and vegetative cover. A
study was made of hunter use on developed and undeveloped campgrounds
on the Bighorn Forest in Wyoming. The study indicated the areaS l;ere
used by hunters for a total of )0.1 days; the average camp was made up
of 4.7 hunters staying 5.9 days; 78% used 4-wheel drive vehicles; 75%
used tents; 70% depended on local water supply for camp use; and 48%
of the areas showed severe damage to soils and vegetative cover.

~'-':.:':/
:':~::._/:'
~'Y'/..j'
::'~.~;..f;
::~.
