<br />adjoining overflowed land extending from the town of Melvern to
<br />the state line. The plan recommended by the Department of Agri-
<br />culture consisted of levee construction and channel clearing and
<br />rectification. The plan, in general, was not put into effect.
<br />In 1932 a report of the Marais des Cygnes Basin was submitted
<br />to Congress by the U. S. Army Engineers pursuant to the Flood Con-
<br />trol Act of 1928. This report presented a plan of flood control by
<br />levee construction and minor channel straightening, but the proposed
<br />improvements cOllld not be economically justified.
<br />In 1934 a study of the flood problem was made by the State Di-
<br />vision of Water Re~ources. Preliminary investigations indicated
<br />that reservoir locations with the. necessary storage capacity were
<br />available, and at a public hearing on the problem, were brought to
<br />the attention of the War Department. A study was made of these
<br />proposed reservoir sites by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, but. on the
<br />basis of preliminary investigations were reported as being unfavor-
<br />able.
<br />At the present time the U. S. Army Engineers are making further
<br />study of the flood problem in this basin and it is anticipated that a
<br />plan will be recommended which will provide a degree of protection
<br />within the limits of economic justification,
<br />
<br />RESERVOIR PROJECTS UNDER INVESTIGATION
<br />
<br />l.MELVERN RESERVOIR.-The Melvern dam site is located on the
<br />Marais des Cygues river, northwest of Melvcm in Osage county.
<br />A reservoir at this location would control the runoff from 362 square
<br />miles of drainage area. The proposed storage capacity of 97,300
<br />acre-feet includes 10,000 acre-feet conservation storage, 18,000 acre~
<br />feet silt reserve and 69,300 acre-feet for flood control storage.
<br />2. POMONA RESERvolR.-This site is located on Dragoon creek
<br />northwest of the town of Pomona in Osage county. Runoff from
<br />322 square miles of drainage area would be controlled by this reser-
<br />voir. Tentative capacities are as follows: flood control 62,300 acre-
<br />feet, conservation storage 10,000 acre-feet and silt reserve 16,000
<br />acre-feet.
<br />3. QUE}lEMO RESERvolR.-This reservoir is located on Salt creek,
<br />east of Lyndon in Osage county. Runoff from 124 square miles of
<br />drainage area would be controlled by this reservoir. The following
<br />capacities have been tentatively adopted for this location: 25,500
<br />acre-feet for flood storage, 18,000 acre-feet silt reserve, and 10,000
<br />acre-feet for conservation.
