ail. ~ -:- - \o~
"'~AU OF RECLAtAA"t

Salt Lake City, utah
Barry D. Wirth (801) 524-5403
For Release: Thursday, November 3, 1994

RBCLAMATI:ON ACDlOWLBDGBS SI:GNU'I:CA!lT WORK OP GeBS PROGRAII
Announce. program'. Capabilities To Be Applied Agency-wide

The Glen Canyon Environmental Studies (GCES) office in

Flagstaff, Arizona, has, through its accomplishments, led the way
for the Bureau of Reclamation's transition from a water

development agency to a water management organization, according

to Commissioner of Reclamation Daniel Beard. "Since 1982, the

GCES, under the leadership of David Wegner, has been instrumental

in the collection and analysis of environmental and cultural

information to assist in the management of Glen Canyon Dam," said
Beard Thursday.

A considerable data base of critical information was
developed which has become the foundation for sound decision
making and commitment in the Glen Canyon Dam Environmental Impact
Statement (GCD EIS). "Now," said Beard, "with the pending
completion of the EIS and the GCES Phase II research, a logical
point of transition exists. While the Glen Canyon Environmental
Studies will end during 1995, this successful model can now be
applied to other environmental issues we face west-wide."

During the coming months, the GCES staff will become part of
the Reclamation Technical Service Center in Denver, Colorado.
Beard went on to say, "While the existing personnel will remain
in Flagstaff, their talents, skills and expertise will be shifted
to other Reclamation challenges on the Colorado River." Also, as
part of the Technical Service Center, the team will assume a
broader mission and be available to all Reclamation regions and
offices.

(OVER)
