I

~O~GI~L ~~~ I
WATER AND RELATED LAND RESOURCES PROGRAM
OF THE
WATER RESOURCES DIVISION, U.S, GEOLOGICAL SURVEY I
IN THE MISSOURI RIVER BASIN

The Water Resources Division investigates the occurrence, quantity, I
quality, distribution and movement of surface and underground waters that
comprise the Nation's water resources, Its activities include the syste-
matic collection, analysis and interpretation of data relating to the I
evaluation of national water resources and investigation of water demand
for industrial, domestic and agricultural purposes; research and development
to improve the scientific basis of investigations and techniques; and
reporting of the results of these investigations through publication or I
other forms of public release.

More specifically, the programs of the Water Resources Division are I
designed to: (1) provide the basic hydrologic data needed for solution of
increasingly complex environmental, land-use and water-development and
management problems and for aiding in optimum management and use of water I
and related land resources; (2) develop methods, instrumentation, and uniform
standards for collecting, analyzing and disseminating water data; (3) con-
duct analytical studies and areal investigations to provide improved
knowledge of functioning of hydrologic systems and predictive models for I
evaluation of water development and management actions; (4) improve effective-
ness of water-resource investigations by carrying out fundamental problem-
oriented research as an integral part of the overall program; (5) coordinate I
acquisition of water data by federal agencies in response to Office of
Management and Budget Circular A-67.

Programs of the Water Resources Division are conducted (1) in cooperation I
with state and local governmental agencies, funded on a fifty-fifty matching
basi~ to undertake data collection and hydrologic studies of mutual federal-
state concern; (2) on behalf of other federal agencies to provide scientific I
and technical assistance to those agencies and water data needed to aid in
accomplishing their water development, management and regulatory missions;
(3) for special water data collection and regional hydrologic studies related I
to national issues such as energy resource development, river basin quality
assessment, flooding, subsurface waste disposal, geothermal resources, water
for food and fiber production and water-related aspects of non-energy I
mineral production.

I
I
I
I
I

-26-
