<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />OOQ655 <br /> <br />FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE <br /> <br />WATER AND RELATED LAND RESOURCE PROGRAM <br /> <br />The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has broad responsibilities to protect <br />the public interest in such areas as conservation and management of fish and <br />wildlife resources and their associated habitats, maintenance; and improve- <br />ment of water quality, esthetics and general recreational use as related to <br />fish and wildlife resources; and the preservation, maintenance, restoration <br />and/or enhancement of aquatic ecosystems, The service, likewise, has similar <br />responsibilities in the analysis of federal water-development projects or <br />private water-development projects to be licensed by the federal government. <br />The principal law assigning these responsibilities to the U.S. Fish and Wild- <br />life Service is the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act of 1958, as amended. <br />This act requires that any agency or department of the federal government <br />proposing water-development projects for construction or any private or public <br />agency submitting application for projects to be constructed under federal <br />permit or license, first shall consult with the U.S, Fish and Wildlife <br />Service with a view to the conservation, management, development and improve- <br />ment of fish and wildlife resources, This act also requires that fish and <br />wildlife conservation be coordinated with other features of such projects and <br />be given equal consideration. <br /> <br />-25- <br />
