U?
~
ln
....,

CHAPTJ<:R I

PROJECT SETTING

\-..

The project area is cut by the Gunnison River and numerous tributar-
ies draining surrounding mountain ranges. The Gunnison River is formed
by the East and Taylor Rivers which meet at Almont, Colo., and then flows
generally northwest 130 miles to its confluence with the Colorado River
at Grand Junction, Colo. Tributaries of the Gunnison River of importance
to the project include Ohio, Antelope, and Tomichi Creeks, and Lake Fork.
Slate River and Cement Creek are tributaries of the East River. Signifi-
cant tributaries of Tomichi Creek include Quartz, Cochetopa, Razor, and
Needle Creeks.

Existing and potential farming areas are from 7.600 to 8,800 feet in
elevation with an average of about 8.000 feet. Because of the high eleva-
tions, the season between killing frosts of 280 is short, averaging only
about 80 days. Precipitation averages about 10.6 inches a year, of which
about 4 inches occur during the growing season.

Livestock production is the mainstay of the economy in the project
area. Mining, lumbering, and recreation are also important but secondary
sources of income. The area is noted throughout the Nation for the fish-
ing on its rivers, lakes, and reservoirs and big game hunting in the sur-
rounding mountains and forests. The area also has won National acclaim
for its winter ski slopes.

'.i@
.... . ,..1ry<t
~:r.:;:.,.~'...
~.<" iW;* 'f!; . ,,;o/f:;;;'

/

Recreational facilities under construction near
Crested Butte.
