<br />-.:t" <br />- <br />1f") <br />- <br /> <br />CliAPTER I <br /> <br />PROJECT SETTING <br /> <br />The Upper Gunnison project area is in the Upper Gunnison River Basin <br />of the Colorado River Basin in west-central Colorado. The area is primar- <br />ily in Gunnison County but includes some lands in Saguache County. Gunni- <br />son, with a 1960 population of 3,477, is the seat of Gunnison County and <br />the major trade center of the project area. Other smaller communities in <br />the area, each with a population of less than 500, include Crested Butte, <br />Almont, Parlin, Doyleville, Crookton, and Lake City. <br /> <br /> <br />A view of the city of Gunnison. <br /> <br />The project area is served by one transcontinental highway, U. S. 50, <br />which passes through Gunnison. The area also is served by Colorado State <br />Highways 114, 135, 149, and 341, all of which are surfaced and well main- <br />tained, as well as by several county roads. No railroads are in operation <br />in the area. <br /> <br />Mountain ranges which are a part of the Continental Divide border the <br />project area on the north, east, and south. The Elk Mountains are to the <br />north, Sawatch Mountains to the east, Cochetopa Mountains to the southeast, <br />and the San Juan Mountains to the south. Peaks in these mountain ranges <br />reach elevations of more than 14,000 feet. To the west of the project area <br />is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. <br /> <br />4 <br />
