<br />~ <br />~ <br />U? <br />~ <br /> <br />CHAPTER II <br /> <br />PRESENT AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT <br /> <br />Farming Practices <br /> <br />Beef cattle production is the major agricultural enterprise in the <br />Upper Gunnison Basin and sheep raising is next in importance. Insignifi- <br />cant amounts of dairy products and a few swine and poultry are raised, <br />mostly for family use. The cattle are marketed both locally and at Den- <br />ver, with nearly all the processing being accomplished outside the proJ- <br />ect area. <br /> <br /> <br />Hereford cattle grazing on irrigated <br />pasture land near Gunnison. <br /> <br />Livestock feed is available on extensive areas of grazing land in <br />the basin and from crops produced on irrigated farm lands. The grazing <br />lands include substantial areas in private ownership as well as large <br />areas administered by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. <br />The range resources are used to capacity, however, and no increases in <br /> <br />6 <br />
