Fairchild <br />August 19, 1974 <br />Page five <br /> <br />comprising 6,000 acres of irrigated land. Investigations were <br />continued to evaluate the salinity content of Cheraw Lake. Water <br />level fluctuations of the lake were observed periodically to <br />determine the effect of these fluctuations on ground water levels <br />in the town of Cheraw. Board staff members, in cooperation with <br />the U. S. Geological Survey, conducted the annual spring ground <br />water level mass measurement in the Arkansas River Valley from <br />Pueblo to the Kansas state line. This activity involved the <br />measurement of key irrigation wells and observation wells to deter- <br />mine ground water levels following the 1973 irrigation season. <br /> <br />The Corps of Engineers submitted an interim report, <br />including a local flood protection project at Lamar, to the office <br />of the Chief Engineer in June 1974. The plan of improvement at <br />Lamar would include a multipurpose dam and reservoir on willow <br />Creek upstream of the city and a right bank levee on the Arkansas <br />River to protect Lamar from that source of flooding. <br /> <br />Three local flood protection projects under study by <br />the Corps of Engineers were continued. These are the following: <br /> <br />a. Las Animas Local Flood Protection Project <br /> <br />This project was authorized by the Flood Control <br />Act of 1956. Final design was completed during FY 1974, and local <br />interests began acquisition of right-of-way. <br /> <br />b. Granada Local Flood Protection Project <br /> <br />Planning studies were completed for provision <br />of flood protection for the town of Granada. <br /> <br />c.
