Following the August 14, 1968 request <br /> <br />and a subsequent investigation of the problem by a New' <br /> <br />Mexico State Police officer no further trouble was encoun- <br /> <br />tered at the Association heading during the 1968 season. <br /> <br />Cerro Canal <br /> <br />Costilla Creek at the canyon mouth transports considerable <br /> <br />bed load consisting mostly of sand. In an effort to reduce <br /> <br />the amount of sand that can enter the Cerro and Acequia <br /> <br />Madre systems during most weekends the flOod gate at the <br /> <br />Cerro diversion dam is raised from 12 to 24 hours to sluice <br /> <br />the sand, that has deposited above the diversion dam, down <br /> <br />Costilla Creek. This procedure reduces but does not elim- <br /> <br />inate sand from entering and depositing in the canals, <br /> <br />Over a period of years the deposition in the Cerro canal <br /> <br />had reduced the capacity of the canal between the diversion <br /> <br />dam and the gage so that during June of 1968 the canal <br /> <br />" couldnot convey sufficient water to satisfy the require- <br /> <br />ments.
