Project Summary: The White River was impounded by Taylor
Draw Dam in 1985 creating Kenney Reservoir. Studies
conducted before 1985 documented squawfish use of the White
River above the dam. The dam blocked squawfish movement into
available habitats upstream and reduced the amount of
historic home-range in the White river by 32%. The
restriction of upstream movement has resulted in the
stockpiling of squawfish immediately below the dam.
Consequently, the density of squawfish in the area below the
dam is one of the highest in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

The goal of this study is to develop an interim year-round
flow recommendation that maintains channel integrity,
promotes habitat diversity and complexity, and maximizes the
habitat available for Colorado squawfish in the White River.
This study is designed to determine channel maintenance
requirements and measure changes in macro-habitat
availability during three experimental base flow scenarios
in the White River. Habitat measurements from this study
will be compared to squawfish habitat use found in previous
studies.

IV. 1996 and 1997 Task Description and Study Schedules: In 1996
study sites were established in early summer and macro-
habitat measurements were collected in late summer and early
fall at high flow levels. In 1997 macro-habitat measurements
were again collected at high and medium flow levels.

V. Relationship to RIPRAP: This study relates to the Green
River Action Plan White River element 1.A.2 of identifying
year round flows on the White River. This study will also
assist in determining the tributary flow needs for the Green
River below the mouth of the Duchesne River.

1
