reevaluation of benefits would have to be Made. This mil!;ht make the
Division reconsider whether or not they would want to administer the
area.

Res~~~~e: As previously mentioned, present indications are
that water quality vill be suN'iciently good to 1ll1ov vater contact
recreation in Bear Creek Lake.

ComrDent: Under proposed plllllS the nevly-created lake
vould be mllllagedP-rlmarily as a cold-water fishery and augmented with
the usual pan fish fishery. Optimum recreational OPllortunities will be
afforded lllld intensive fishing pressures would assure good utilization of
these fish.

Res-Eonse~ Concur vith the Division's intent to manage the
lake as a cold-water fishery. Hovever, as indicated by water quality
data supplied by the Environmental Protection Agency, Colorado vater
quality stlllldards classification of B2' and a comment by the Bureau of '
Outdoor Recreation, the establishment of a cold-water fishery may be marginal.

Comment: It is conceded that the vater in the impoundment
will be richer in nutrients than the present stretch of stream. However,
it is doubtful that aquatics or algae blooms will become a problem in
this lake. Proper management methods Cllll be utilized to prevent any
excessive plllllt growth.

Response: The Division will be consulted during the final
design stages of the project in order to vork out management methods vhich
can be used to prevent llllY excessive plant growth.

Comment: Control of public access could prevent the
destruction of semi-arid vegetation by excess human traffic. Consideration
should be given to the carrying capacity of the project area and the
ultimate design should reflect this consideration.

Respo~ This is considered a valid cOlllDlent and was
added to the existing discussion on this same subject alrea~v in the
statement.

Comment: No mention is made of the possibility :of the
establishment of llll environmental center on lands within the project take-
line.

Response: This was considered a valid comment. Mention
has been made of the possibility of establishment of such a center in
the beneficial aspects section of the statement. However, even though
the Aardvark Society has exp, essed an interest in such a center it is
still in initial planning stages.

22
