03Gl

urban/rural neighborhoods.

The cities and surrounding rural

area are, in fact, an economic and cultural unit to a large

degree, in which the cities provide educational, financial,

medical, and other support services to the workers in the

basic primary industry, agriculture.

~

These charts are organized geographically by school

districts of Weldon Valley (Weldona), Wiggins, Brush, Fort

~

Morgan, and Platte Valley (Kersey area).

The geographical

definitions are not perfect, however, because census enumera-

tion districts and school districts are not coterminous. The

Platte Valley figures characterize the upper flood pool and

adjacent areas in and around Kersey, while the Weldona Valley

data characterize the lower flood pool.

Wiggins is a small

area south of the flood pool, while Fort Morgan and Brush data

characterize the rural and urban communities attached to those

two towns.

Tables I-III display the basic demographic data for these

areas.

Table I depicts the age/sex structure, which is high-

lighted by the following characteristics:

. Evidence of a severe loss of youth after high school,
marked in all areas, but a little less severe in
the Fort Morgan area.

. A substantial community of older people in Brush and
Fort Morgan.

. A concentration of very young people in Weldona Valley
and Wiggins.

~

These ~atterns are discussed in detail, and interpreted,

In Sections 3.1 and 3.19.

54
