03lJJ

The Social Characteristics of the Area

.'

This section presents a preliminary overview of social

,and economic characteristics in the part of the South Platte

Valley where impacts will be felt most markedly, from the

Hardin flood pool area downstream to Brush. Impacts to Greeley

and to Sterling will also be felt but not nearly so forefully.

Detailed characteristics of the area and how they would be

impended by the three alternatives (no dam, Narrows site, Hardin

site) will be presented in Chapter 3 under some twenty headings.

The social characteristics of an area, broadly defined,

include the demographic profile of,the people, that is, their

characteristics by age, race, sex, ethnicity; their migrator~

trends and attachment to given areas; their educational charac-

teristics; and their family economic characteristics. One might

also want to include the trends in population demoyraphics, and

more detailed employment characteristics, but these are discussed

fully in Sections 3.1, 3.4, and 3.19. This, section gives a

more general statistical impression of the characteristics of

~eople in the valley.

This characterization will be made in the form of tables

obtained from the U.S. Office of Education, .which summarizes

1970 U.S. Census data by school district rather than by place.

In Colorado, school districts are independent of otber political

boundaries and mix urban and rural areas. Although later sec-

tions will concentrate more upon political subdivisions, it

seems appropriate here to portray the valley in terms of its

..

"

53
