034;?not
way.

in the flood pool but who might be affected in some other

Because the importance of finding out the types of

attitudes which existed in these two groups was clear, different

~

strategies were used in each case. In the flood pool areas

(Hardin and Weldon Valley) interviews were conducted on a house-

to-house and farm-to-farm basis. That is, interviewers drove

'.

along the farm roads and stopped at most of the farms in the

flood pools

thus reaching a fairly large proportion of all

families in the flood pool areas. In the impacted towns,

interviews were conducted on most of the streets, again going

from house to house. This was not especially difficult because

of the limited number of houses in the communities involved.

It was felt that the information required of non flood

pool area residents did not require as extensive a coverage,

because many of these residents would probably not have such

drastic impacts to contend with.

In addition, the value of the

expert information interviews was that we could obtain reasonably

good estimates of impacts (as distinct from attitudes about the
project) from expert informations. Thus, in the non flood pool

areas residents were interviewed in various local settings

(houses, businesses, farms, etc.) on a drop-in basis. It

.

became apparent after many such interviews that while residents

differed somewhat on what they thought about the projects,

there was some uniformity in the views directly related to

whether a person lived in a flood pool area or they did not.

The interviews with both expert informants and local

..

residents were conducted in a two wave set of visits to the

31
