0341

area of community life. Local physicians would have a know-

ledge about health problems and health resources; employment

and welfare specialists would know about considerations in

their fields; etc. The decision on sample here was also

fairly straightforward. Interviews were conducted with such

experts throughout the impact area, from the Greeley area

all the way east through to the Sterling area. A reasonably

standard interviewing strategy was employed. In each of the

communities such individuals were sought out at their places

of employment (e.g., public health facility, employment office,

local businesses). Once interviews were completed, respondents

were asked to suggest others with knowledge in this area.

In this manner a chain of interviews was conducted, working

through South platte Valley. Similar expert informant inter-

views have been used in many other studies. Two types of data

were of concern in these expert informant interviews. First,

secondary data which the interviewee had pertaining to his

area of concern (e.g., physicians in public health have morbidi-

ty data on their communities, employment service offices have

data on unemployment). Second, we were interested in their own

views of the project in light of their area of knowledge. Both

types of data were gathered and are presented in Chapter Three

of this report.

Finally, we were interested in obtaining data on attitudes

of residents toward the projects. Here there were clearly two

distinct groups: residents who would be displaced by a flood

pool (were a project to be implemented) and residents who were

~

~

.

u

30
