4455

of about 60 feet in width. This will require about lOO acres
of clearing.

.

(3) There are private lands along the alinement of the
Mt. Elbert Conduit that are presently used for pasture
and the cultivation of irrigated hay and irrigated pasture.
Construction will preclude some of this production tempo-
rarily. Since the conduit will be buried, most of the land
can be returned to production following construction.

(4) Construction will have an immediate short term stimu-
lative effect on the local economy resulting from the
increased demands for food, lodging, entertainment and
other services for construction labor as well as for
construction materials and fuel, oil, and equipment parts
as may be purchased locally.

(5) The construction will have a short term impact normally
associated with operation and maintenance of heavy earth-
moving and concrete batching, mixing and placing equipment.
These include a temporary construction headquarters camp
of concentrated activity throughout the construction period
and less concentrated activity all along the Mt, Elbert
Conduit alinement as construction progresses. Noise, traffic,
and some dust are the predominant characteristics of
construction.

.

(6) Smaller animals and birds displaced by the clearing
operation and physical construction of the conduit will
probably migrate into adjoining areas.

(7) wnile most of the conduit will be screened by forest
growth, parts of the conduit alinement will be visible from
several locations in the Arkansas Valley from Sugar Loaf Dam
to the Mt. Elbert Forebay.

(B) An archeological survey of the Mt. Elbert Conduit
will be made during the summer of 1975 by Dr. William
Buckles, Department of Anthropology, Southern Colorado
State College, Pueblo, Colorado.

(9) Halfmoon Diversion Dam will require the clearing of
approximately 2 acres of land. The terrain is rocky and
covered primarily with sagebrush, grass, and coniferous
forest. Approximately 2 acres of private land will be
acquired for rights-af-way.

IV-65

.
