For example, a relatively small amount of the <br />nation's timber supply is tied up in potential wilderness. <br />A loss of this timber to wilderness could be made up easily <br />through more intensive management of our working forests. <br />Beller methods of reforestation, thinning, fertilization, <br />control of fire, insects and disease, and improvements in the <br />genetic makeup of seedlings could all help boost the annual <br />harvest, as could improved timber utilization, logging <br />methods and planning. Elsewhere, incentive programs might <br />spur fiber production on small, privately owned woodlots. <br />Wilderness advocates should - and they often do - recognize <br /> <br />9 <br />
