.

.

~
~
~J
~
(
c

Construction of the Waddell pumping-generating plant continues,
with the structural work about 80 percent done. Installation of pumps
and motors in the plant will begin soon.
Construction of the dam embankment also will begin soon, following
the award of a $135 million contract in December.

Stewart Mountain Dam

Construction of the new spillway at the dam is complete, and the
radial gates that will control flow from the spillway have been tested.
The river outlet works penstock and power penstock also have been
rehabilitated, with the addition of a new liner and new valves.
Placement of concrete overlays on selected portions of the dam to help
stabilize it in the event of an earthquake is nearly complete, and three
feet of concrete has been added to the top of the dam to accomodate the
installation of steel cables through its arch beginning t~is summer.
The top of the dam also has been widened to provide easier access for
maintenance vehicles.
Current work involves construction of a concrete wall for the new
spillway's inlet channel and construction of parapet walls on top of the
dam. Also, the concrete piers on the existing spillway are being
lengthened so stoplogs can be placed in front of the spillway gates
during routine maintenance work. Most of this work will be complete by
May, and all work will be done by early July.
Saguaro Lake, lowered 45 feet in October so this work could be
accomplished, will be returned to its normal level by March 15.
From June 1990 to June 1991, post-tensioned steel cables will be
installed through the dam and into its foundation at selected locations
to further stabilize it.

Roosevelt Dam

Realignment and widening of the Apache Trail (S.R. 88) near the
dam is about 75 percent complete, and the work is scheduled to be done
by June. The road through the construction area remains closed to
traffic from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily except weekends and holidays,
and this will continue until mid-March. periodic road closures also will
occur throughout the modification period.
Construction of a new, 16-foot diameter, 925-foot long tunnel
through the canyon wall around the south side of the dam is underway.
About 80 feet of the tunnel, which will carry water from Roosevelt Lake
into the Salt River and to the dam's hydroelectric powerplant after
modification is finished, has been excavated.
Relocation of a portion of SR 88 near the dam is about 43 percent
complete, and construction of a new bridge across Roosevelt Lake just
upstream of the dam by the Arizona Department of Transportation
continues. The bridge is scheduled to be complete in September, and the
road relocation by the end of 1990.

-more-
