., ~ '

0020!G

1965 Operations (Contd)

.

During 1965, Harlan County Dam prevented $60,000 in flood damages and
since 1952, the accrued flood damages prevented are $6,440,000.

Lovewell Dam and Reaervoir

The reservoir inflow for 1965 was l88~ of the most probsble, The
maximum elevation of 1586.69 (55,190 acre-feet) was reached on March 5.
This was 4.09 feet (13,500 acre-feet) in the flood control pool, and
was partially due to the planned 6000acre-feet carryover storage to
aasure adequate irrigation supply while the riprap rapairs were being
made st Harlan County Dam, The minimum pool level of elevation 1579.28
(32,600 acre-feet) was reached on July 26. This was 3.32 feet (9,090
acre-feet) below the top of the conservation pool.

Although no flood damages were prevented during 1965, the project has
prevented $246,000 in damages since 1957.

Kirwin Dam and Reservoir

.

The reservoir inflow for 1965 was 205~ of the most probable, The
maximum reservoir elevation of 1730,38 (105,270 acre-feet) or 1,98
feet (10,090 acre-feet) in the flood pool was reached on October 22.
Due to the low capacity, 500 + c.f.a., of the haul road river crossing,
at the construction site of Glen Elder Dam downstream, it was necessary
to regulate the releases from the flood pool so that flooding of the
crossing was prevented and releases had to be correlated with releases
from Webster Reservoir where storage was also in the flood pool, This
restriction on Kirwin and Webster is being alleviated by increasing
the river crossing capacity to about 2000 c.f.s.

The 8,228 acres irrigated under the Kirwin Canal were provided a full
water supply. The irrigation releases reduced the pool level to eleva-
tion 1724,40 (76,700 acre-feet) on August 23. This was 4,0 feet (18,480
acre-feet) below the top of the conservation pool.

During 1965, Kirwin Dam prevented $325,000 in flood damages, Dsmages
prevented since 1955 are $1,392,000.

Webster Dam and Reservoir

The reservoir inflow for 1965 was 1727. of the most probable, The
reservoir reached a depth of 0.8 feet (2,791 acre-feet) in the flood
pool on November 9. During October, in cooperation with the State
of Kansas and the Geological Survey, relesses from the reservoir were
withheld so that base flow characteristics from Webster Dam to the
mouth of the South Fork of the Solomon River could be determined.
Releases were also withheld in late November and early December so
as not to hamper the pouring of the concrete piers of a highway bridge
being constructed south of Stockton, Kansas. When releases were resumed

.

9
