0020n~

1965 Operations (Contd~

.

Medicine Creek Dam and Harry Strunk Lake

The reaervoir inflow for 1965 waa 1167. of the most probable. The
reaervoir reached a depth of 1,23 feet (2,333 acre-feet) in the flood
control pool on May 26, Irrigation demands resulted in the reservoir
being drawn down approximately 4.79 feet (8,083 acre-feet) in the
conservation pool by August 20. On August I, an evaluation of reser-
voir storage and irrigation demand ahowed storage in excess of project
needs; therefore, storage in the amount of 37 acre-feet was sold to
natural flow appropriators under Warren Act Contracts.

No flood damages were prevented by operation of Medicine Creek Dam
during 1965. There has been, however, $246,000 of flood damages
prevented since 1949.

Norton Dam and Reservoir

The reservoir inflow for 1965 was 182% of the most probable, with a
maximum elevation of 2302.55 (32,261 acre-feet) reached on November 1,
This was 1.75 feet below top of conaervation pool, A Warren Act Con-
tract was executed with the Almena Irrigation District for the sale
of storage water not-to exceed 2,000 acre-feet from Norton Reservoir.
Under this contract, 453 acre-feet of storage water was delivered to
lands served by private pumps from the Prairie Dog Creek.

.

Delivery of municipal water supply to the City of Norton was started
on September 6, An average of 1,3 acre-feet per day was used for the
remainder of the year for a total use of 151 acre-feet.

Harlan County Dam and Reservoir

The reservoir storage on January I, 1965 was 11.5 feet (130,000 acre-
feet) below top of conservation pool level. This was a planned operation
due to the riprap repairs at Harlan County Dam. These repairs were
completed in January. By May 1, the start of the irrigation season,
Harlan County storage had increased by 28,000 acre-feet from natural
inflows, The conservation pool was filled by June 16, The total
reservoir inflow for 1965 was 1477. of the most probable, Irrigation
demanda lowered the reservoir elevation to 1942.67 (300,872 acre-feet)
on August 23. The maximum elevation reached in 1965 waa 1948,93
(383,497 acre-feet) on October 21. This was 2.93 feet (40,937 acre-
feet) in the flood pool. In conjunction with the evacuation of the
flood pool, bankfull releases were made by the Corps of Engineers
during the latter part of October and the early part of November
to study the Republican River channel conditions downstream,

At no time throughout the period June through September were minimum
daily flowa of the Republican River below the Superior, Nebraska,
sewer outlet less than the desired minimum of 40 c.f.s. as outlined
in the"952 Statemeot of Operational Objectives for Harlan County
Reservoir.
