~

0020~:

1965 Operations

.

CHAPTER II - SUMMARY OF 1965 OPERATIONS

PRECIPI TA nON

The precipitation for the Kansas River Projects for 1965 was 133% of
normal ranging from 169% at Hsr1an County Reservoir to 108% at Cedsr
Bluff Reservoir. The precipitation for the first six months of the
year was 116% of normal. These data are shown on Table 4.

RESERVOIR INFLOW

The inf10wa varied from 106% of most probable at Hugh Butler Lake to
205% at Kirwin Reservoir, Table 2 shows the 1965 inflows compared to
the forecasts for 1966, Exhibits 21 through 31 graphically present
the 1965 inflow as compared to historical inflows for the period of
record.

RESERVOIR OPERATIONS

.

The conservation poo1a of the reservoirs except Hugh Butler and Norton
were filled during 1965. Operations were within the scope of the Annual
Operating Plan, The year started with the reservoir contents under
reasonable minimum forecBst conditions, but due to above normal precip-
itation and inflows, a majority of the reservoirs ended the year with
carryover storage equal to or greater than that forecasted for most
probable inflow conditions, A full water supply was furnished to
116,694 acres of project land. Table 3 shows the 1965 reservoir con-
tents by months. The operation hydrographs are platted on EXhibits 1
through 11,

Although flooding did occur above the reservoirs and on other uncontrolled
areas in the Ksnaas River Basin, all floods were contained by the
reservoirs with no major flooding on reaches belo~. Control of these
floods by the reservoirs prevented $1,635,000 of flood damages.

The details of operation for each reaervoir are described in the follow-
ing paragrapha:

Bonny Dam and Reservoir

The reservoir inflow for 1965 was 183% of the most probable, A spring
drawdown of 18,000 acre-feet was made aa planned in 1965 to aupp1ement
downstream storage. Natural flow bypaases as requested by the Colorado
Department of Water Resources were made to Hale Ditch from April 3D
to September 27. Only 96 acre-feet of storage waa ao1d under Warren
Act as a aupp1ementa1 water supply for 590 acres served by Hale Ditch.
The minimum pool level of elevation 3661,97 (23,665 acre-feet) was
reached on June 4, This is 10,03 feet below the top of the conaervation
poo 1.

.

In 1965, Bonny Dam prevented $273,000 in flood damages, During the
life of the dam, the accumulation of the damages prevented has been
$1,920,000.

6
