002540

REPORT OF COLORADO RIVER COMMISSION OF NEVADA

19

COLORADO RIVER BASIN PROJECT

In August 1965, the House Subcommittee on Irrigation and Reclamation
held hearings on legislation commonly referred to as H.R. 4671 to author-
ize the Colorado River Basin project. The project, as conceived at that time,
included the Central Arizona Unit, Bridge Canyon Dam and Powerplant,
Marble Canyon Dam and Powerplant, the Dixie Project, the Southern
Nevada Water Supply Project, certain water salvage programs along the
Colorado River south of Davis Dam, and studies to supplement the waters of
the Colorado River through importation from areas of surplus waters.
The commission, in its own behalf and on behalf of the Governor of the

State of Nevada, testified in favor of this legislation with certain amendments.
Hearings were not completed by the House subcommittee during that session,
due mainly to differences between the Upper Basin States and the Lower

Basin States, as evidenced by the testimony presented.

Following the hearings Nevada participated, along with the other six Colo-

rado River Basin States, in discussions and negotiations leading to an accept-

able draft of legislation to be presented in the second session of the Congress.

l
l
.'

~
