20 REPORT OF COLORADO RIVER COMMISSION OF NEVADA

FORT MOHAVE DEVELOPMENT AREA

Negotiations were initiated late in 1965 to purchase the Fort Mohave

Development Area from the United States for $3,055,000. The impetus to

enter into these negotiations was the proposal made by the Southern Califor-

nia Edison Company to construct a 1,500 megawatt coal-fired, steam-electric

generating plant in that area.

The proposal by Southern California Edison Company would require the

purchase by that company of approximately 2,500 acres of land in the north-

ern part of the Fort Mohave area and the use of up to 30,000 acre feet of

water from the Colorado River for a period of at least 35 years. Negotiations
were carried on with the Edison Company throughout the year reaching a
stage where the State of Nevada and Clark County were assured of the suffi-
cient benefits to warrant entering into contracts with the company for the
purchase of land and water to meet the company's needs.
The interest of potential developers in the Fort Mohave Development Area
was greatly stimulated by the Southern California Edison Company's pro-

posal. It is evident that the construction of the large steam-electric generating

plant will hasten the development of the entire Fort Mohave area.

J
J
J

i"
