002539

REPORT OF COLORADO RIVER COMMISSION OF NEVADA

17

ELDORADO VALLEY DEVELOPMENT

During 1965 the Colorado River Commission carried on active negotia-
tions with several potential developers for the purchase and development of
Eldorado Valley. The area involved consists of about 105,000 acres of unde-
veloped desert land in a valley 25 miles from Las Vegas. These lands were
set aside by an act of Congress granting an option to the commission, acting
for the State, for purchase at the federally appraised price which has now been
determined to be $1,320,000.
As water is essential to development of this land a sufficient amount has
been allocated to serve at least initial development of the valley. The water
would be delivered to this valley through the Southern Nevada Water Supply
Project facilities. What work has been done on underground water deter-
mination has indicated very little water available in the aquifers underlying
the valley. In addition, the recharge to the underground basin is estimated
to be very small.
The commission offered to release certain lands within Eldorado VaIley as
a site for a high-energy accelerator proposed for construction by the Atomic
Energy Commission. From the standpoint of power, water, and land, the site
met the requirements of AEC. However, due to other considerations it was

f.
