Metropolitan Water Supply Investigations - Phase IT Plan of Study
7/5/94 4:17 PM

Page 11

Locate the aquifer boundaries, aquifer properties and the volume potential for
storage.

Delineate areas where water returns to the streams in a short period of time
and areas where large volumes of water can be stored for long periods.

Identify areas where recharge water can be appropriated by wells or from the
stream after it discharges from the alluvial aquifers.

Identify areas of water quality concern.

c) Output

A memorandum report presenting compiled fmdings with accompanying
graphs, maps and tables as needed.

d) Sub-Task Leader: Mark Palumbo

4. Sub-Task 4d: Artificial Recharge Technical Issues -
South Platte Alluvial Aquifers

a) Purpose
Based on information reviewed and knowledge of the alluvial aquifers,
dev~lop the technical issues related to recharge of shallow aquifers.

b) Approach

Review technical information regarding storage and artificial recharge of
alluvial aquifers which will include numerous recharge projects along the
South Platte which use recharge pits and ditch seepage, such as FRlCO (Beebe
Draw), South Adams County Water and Sanitation District (Ford Recharge
Facility), and Riverside irrigation project. Review some of the case histories
of California recharge projects.

Evaluate areas where water can be stored and then appropriated after it
discharges to the stream system.

Evaluate areas where water can be stored for long periods of time and can be
appropriated by using wells.

Evaluate the use of weBs, recharge pits and existing ditches as alternate means
of recharge.

Identify both the quantitative and qualitative effects of recharge.

Evaluate water quality concerns which may pose recharge facility problems.
